Energy system depending on fossil fuels has recently caused serious problems such as global warming and air pollution. Then, the construction of new energy systems in place of fossil fuels has been desired. The use of solar energy giving rise to hydrogen generation from water using such photocatalysts as semiconductors has been investigated widely. However,most of oxide semiconductors do not have visible light excitation ability. We have recently reported the syntheses of nanosized metal compound semiconductor/carbon cluster composite materials through calcination of organic moiety-metal hybrid polymers, and the composite materials were shown to exhibit charge separation and redox ability under visible light-irradiation. Previously,we showed that CeO /carbon clusters/Ho O composite material decomposed water to H and O with a molar ratio of H /O =2 via visible light responsive two-step excitation in the process of CeO→ carbon clusters→HoO . We consider that the water split in the system will be caused by an effective oxidation capability at the CeO site,since CeO has a rather high band gap of 3.1eV. In this work, in order to investigate the oxidation feature of CeO in detail, nano-sized CeO /carbon composite materials Ic’s were prepared by the calcination of cerium (III) acetate/starch complex I, and the electronic features of Ic’s were examined.
