A Tragic Catalyst for Change On June 11, 2002, Sophia King, a 23-year-old African American woman diagnosed with schizophrenia, was shot and killed by an Anglo police officer in Austin, Texas. During the four days prior to the incident, King had exhibited erratic and disruptive behavior. Neighbors and apartment management filed several complaints with police about King's behavior and noise from her apartment, but community-based prevention services failed to ameliorate the situation. At the time of her death, King's behavior had escalated and she was threatening the housing manager of her complex with a knife.
