International audienceMortars represent a class of material basicallyconstituted by a mixture of different phases(i.e. binder, aggregates, water) and widespreadused for constructive uses and artworks.Current scientific literature regarding the possibilityof mortar radiocarbon dating reports differentand still contradictory results. Most of theobserved inaccuracy of the dating method oftenderives from the presence of carbonaceousresiduals of limestone origins drasticallyincreasing the mortar age estimation contributingwith significant aliquots of dead carbon.Most of the existing methodologies aim to isolatebinder from other materials, preserving atrace of the 14C signature of the atmosphereabsorbed during mortar setting. In this work aseries of measurements (i.e. %C and 14C) of differentmatrices involved in the mortar productionprocess simulated in a simplified version inthe laboratory environment will be shown. Morein detail the isotopic signature of the CO2 presentin the laboratory air during mortar setting iscompared with the signal extracted from thesynthesised mortar by means of a separationprotocol of the binder. Our analyses are performedwith the aim to evaluate this procedureof dead C suppression efficiency for accuratemortar radiocarbon dating
