International audienceThis article presents how a survey method based on pedestrian movement helps to understand the individual and collective representations associated to a neighborhood by its inhabitants.In order to grasp the meaning of the word “neighborhood” for those who live in it, we ask them to make us visit their neighborhood. We leave them free to define route, duration and conversation topics. We record their speeches with a microphone and the route with a GPS. The method serves three purposes: it allows to enter the “lived” dimensions of the space, it causes sensitive reactivation that prompts the mobilization of representations and it obliges the respondents to think about their experience of their daily environment. Our visits then lead the implementation of this environment in routes and speeches.From 21 visits made in Bottière-Chénaie (Nantes) we show how this method places the surveyed in the position of guides but also in a situation of visitors in their own living spaces. We question the meaning that we can attribute to routes and how they tell us about the representations of the territories we are studying. In addition to the explicit comments of respondents, we study the choices of the spaces they traverse, show us, avoid, or in which they stop, turn around and their order of appearance during the visit. The challenge is particularly being able to distinguish what in these choices succession is due to representations of the space or to practical constraints. Our goal is to demonstrate the potential of our “free visits” as a tool to capture the spatial representations.Cet article est une contribution méthodologique présentant comment une technique d’enquête s’appuyant sur le déplacement piéton au sein d’un quartier permet d’atteindre le sens vécu de cet espace.Dans le but de saisir le sens du terme quartier pour ceux qui l’habitent, nous leur demandons de nous faire visiter leur quartier en les laissant libres de définir itinéraire, durée et thématiques abordées. Durant la visite, enregistrée par un micro et un GPS, nous accompagnons les enquêtés en silence, n’intervenant que pour les relancer. La méthode répond à trois objectifs : elle permet de saisir les dimensions de l’espace vécu, elle provoque des réactivations sensibles déclenchant la mobilisation de représentations in situ et elle place les enquêtés en situation de réflexion sur leur expérience d’un environnement qui pour eux est quotidien et leur apparaît alors comme « normal » voire « banal ». Nos visites amènent alors la mise en itinéraires et discours de cet environnement.À partir de 21 visites réalisées à Bottière-Chénaie (Nantes) nous montrons comment cette méthode place les enquêtés en position de guides mais aussi, par son caractère involontaire, en situation de visiteurs dans leurs propres lieux de vie. Nous interrogeons les sens attribuables aux itinéraires suivis et comment ils nous renseignent sur les réalités vécues des territoires étudiés. Outre les commentaires explicites des enquêtés, nous étudierons les choix des lieux traversés, montrés ou éludés, leurs ordres d’apparition ou encore les demi-tours et arrêts effectués. L’enjeu est notamment de distinguer ce qui, dans ces choix, relève de représentations de l’espace vécu ou de contraintes pratiques. Ainsi souhaitons-nous démontrer le potentiel des visites libres comme outil pour saisir les représentations spatiales
