El presente articulo tiene por objeto desarrollar una tipologia de gobiernos presidencialistas latinoamericanos tal como estan determinados en los ordenamientos constitucionales vigentes en esta segunda decada del siglo XXI, como asimismo determinar sus debilidades institucionales. En Chile se han planteado en el ambito parlamentario algunas reformas constitucionales al tipo de gobierno presidencialista que se senalan como acercamientos al semipresidencialismo; nuestra hipotesis es que ellas solo son variaciones menores del presidencialismo puro, que se encuentran lejos del tipo de gobierno semipresidencial, el que constituye una alternativa viable y posible para afianzar una democracia constitucional duradera en Chile y que posibilita superar las debilidades del presidencialismo chileno.
