espanolEste articulo examina el surgimiento, consolidacion y decadencia del chacoli, vino tipico chileno elaborado en el siglo XIX y parte del XX. Heredero de la tradicion espanola colonial, el chacoli chileno se elaboraba a partir de Uva Pais, Moscatel de Alejandria y variedades criollas, sobre todo Torontel. En el ultimo tercio del siglo XIX llego a representar el 28% de la produccion chilena de vinos. Con posterioridad comenzo a decaer, muy criticado por los tecnocratas europeos y sus seguidores chilenos, que negaron todo valor enologico a las variedades utilizadas y los metodos artesanales. De todos modos, el chacoli se ha mantenido latente en pequenos segmentos de consumidores, sobre todo de segmentos populares y campesinos; ademas, desde 1975 se reivindica en la Fiesta del Chacoli, celebrada anualmente en Donihue, en el corazon profundo de la huasa provincia de Colchagua. EnglishThis article examines the emergence, consolidation and decline of Chacoli, typical Chilean wine. Heir to the Spanish colonial tradition, the Chilean Chacoli was made from Uva Pais (called Mission in California), Muscat of Alexandria and landraces, especially Torontel (Yellow Muscat). In the last third of the nineteenth century, Chacoli represented 28% of Chilean wine production. This typical wine then began to decline, strongly criticized by European technocrats and their Chilean fans who denied any value wine varieties used and artisanal methods. Anyway, the Chacoli has remained latent in small segments of consumers, especially popular segments and peasants; moreover, since 1975 it claimed in Chacoli Festival, held annually in Donihue, in the deep heart of the traditional province of Colchagua.
