This paper presents an analysis of the film Sagrado y obsceno (Roman Chalbaud, 1976) from a sociosemiotic perspective that allows us to discover the interrelations between the characters and their significance in the social environment of the period of history in which it is set (early 1960s). The methodology used is based in different authors, sociologists as well as semioticians, such as: Blanco, van Dijk, Lucien, Cordova, Sonesson and Villegas, among others. Sagrado y obsceno is visualized as a sort of autobiography, where the experiences of the author´s childhood have new significances, discovering characters, interactions and spaces where everything converges in their everyday life, when Chalbaud arrived in Caracas from his native Merida, in the late 1930s. Sagrado y obsceno is an adaptation of a play exhibited in 1961.
