This paper analyzes a document entitled “What women can study in Valparaiso”, written in 1945 (approximately) by one of the first nurses in Chile, Gladys Peake. This document is examined through a discourse analysis, as a document which depicts a particular age, which tells us about the nursing social context, its characteristics and visions at a certain period of time. Results show the prevalence of an own discourse referring the professional nursing origins as a method to obtain social awareness. It argue in favor of its assessment and the necessity of nursing in that period. From there we hope to reflect on the profession in the current context.
