espanolLa enfermedad del “susto” presente en toda America Latina, con especificidades culturales propias, ha sido analizada habitualmente bajo el perfil de los llamados “sindromes de filiacion cultural”, pero sin embargo poco se ha valorado bajo la perspectiva de los estados alterados de conciencia (EAC) que abren la puerta a su consideracion dentro de los episodios de corte chamanico de los pueblos amerindios que fueron contemplados desde el prisma de la posesion demoniaca en el periodo colonial. El articulo ofrece un analisis comparativo de documentos coloniales y etnografias contemporaneas de la region andina. EnglishThe ‘susto’(scare) illness, present across Latin America with local cultural characteristics, has been traditionally analyzed under the framework of the so-called ‘culture-bound syndromes’ and has been overlooked from the perspective of altered states of consciousness (ASC). This perspective opens the door to its consideration within Amerindian shamanic-like episodes that were conceptualized as demonic possession in the colonial period. This article presents a comparative analysis of colonial documents and contemporary ethnographies of the Andean region.
