Pulsed-ˆeld gel electrophoresis(PFGE) patterns were examined in vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus(VRE) strains isolated from the intestines of VRE carriers. VRE strains were isolated from the specimens of ˆve VRE carriers to conduct PFGE analysis. PFGE patterns diŠered with the VRE strains. The phylogenetic tree of the PFGE patterns was constructed for strains collected from two VRE carriers to conduct cluster analysis. The PFGE patterns were classiˆed into two clusters with a similarity coe‹cient of 80 and into two and seven clusters with a similarity coe‹cient of 85. Subsequently, a single colony of a VRE strain was cultured with a disk containing levo‰oxacin(LVFX) on a solid medium. Colonies that grew around the disk were isolated and subcultured for 30 passages. PFGE patterns were examined for each strain. The PFGE patterns changed at the 13th passage. The observation that a single subcultured VRE strain from the same intestine showed diŠerent PFGE patterns suggests that the PFGE patterns may have changed over time. Therefore, PFGE pattern analysis of a single colony from one patient may misidentify the route of nosocomial infection during an outbreak.
