セレクチンは白血球と内皮細胞の接着に関与する接着分子群である。その一つであるELAM1はサイトカインの刺激によって内皮細胞表面に現れ、好中球、単球、好酸球、NK細胞、CLA+メモリーT細胞といった細胞の接着を促進する。 ELAM1は急性及び慢性の炎症性疾患で出現するという証拠がある。さらにELAM1が結腸癌の転移に関与していることを示唆するデータもある。推定されているELAM1のリガンドについて詳しく述べる。現在のところELAM1との相互作用のすべてではないにしろその大部分に、Slex構造そのもの [SAα2, 3Galβ1, 4 (α1, 3Fuc)GlcNAc] ではないかもしれないがその関連の糖鎖構造が重要であることは明らかである。そしてこの構造で、重要なのはシアル酸とフコースである。
