The importance of sugar to humans is symbolized by the fact that glucose, a well known synonym for sugar, is the sole energy source for the human brain to function and that sweetness is the most important taste to humankind. Furthermore, glucose is not only the most abundant organic molecule in nature but also its polymers, such as starch and cellulose, have a long history of use by humans and other life forms. On this occasion of the 100th issue of TIGG, I have undertaken the task of making a general survey of the organizations for Japanese carbohydrate researchers, as part of my duties as ex-president (2003-2004) of the Japanese Society of Carbohydrate Research (JSCR), as one of the promoters of the foundation of the Japanese Consortium of Glycoscience and Glycotechnology (JCGG), as a secretary general of FCCA, and as an editor-in chief of TIGG. It is no exaggeration to say that glycoscience began with chemical studies on relative stereoconfiguration of hexoses by the Nobel Prize winning scientist Emil Fischer. One century later we are facing the coming of age of glycobiology and glycoscience is expected to contribute greatly to improving quality of life. Over time a variety of organizations for carbohydrate researchers were founded. At first, carbohydrate researchers found a common meeting ground in sectional meetings of the organizations for basic or disciplinary academic fields such as chemistry and the chemical industry; later more comprehensive and carbohydrate-directed organizations were established. An example of the former is the American Chemical Society (ACS) which has 158,000 members and was established in 1876, a few decades after the founding of European chemical societies. Carbohydrate researchers in the field of the sugar industry were organized relatively early in the ACS as the Division of Sugar Chemistry and Technology (1921); the division name changed to the Division of Sugar Chemistry in 1932 before settling on its present name, the Division of Carbohydrate Chemistry in 1952. There were 382 division members in 1960, which increased to 735 in 1986, and to over 1,100 in 1996.
