Caring for families aims to respond to their needs as a whole and their members individually, taking the attitude as an important component and the presence of the family as a stimulus. Objective: To understand family valuation attitudes in Nursing care practices in the neonatal intensive care scenario in a public reference hospital from Sao Luis - MA. Methodology: This is a clipping of the research Importance of the Family for Care Processes: Nurses' Attitudes in the Hospital Context and Primary Care Context linked with Nursing Department of the Federal University of Maranhao and to Grupo de Estudo e pesquisa na Saude da Familia, da Crianca e do Adolecente (GEPSFCA) [Family, Child and Adolescent Health Study and Research Group]. A descriptive exploratory study was carried out with a qualitative approach based on Content Analysis, which consists in the use of a set of systematic techniques and procedures for analyzing communications to obtain a description of the content of the messages. The data were obtained through an open, unstructured individual interview using guiding and circular questions after the HUUFMA Ethics Committee's evaluation with protocol number 1,249,885. Nurses who performed activities for at least 6 months in the Neonatal Unit were participants in the study. The study consisted of a corpus defined by 11 interviews from which 340 registration units and five topics were extracted. Results: Strategies for families’cares in the scenario of neonatal intensive care; Caring for families focuses on the consistency of care; Factors that guide the nurse's practice in the NICU; Limitations for the Care of Families and Care Products. From the analytical process it was revealed that the nurse uses the reception, the listening, the empathy and the bond as strategies to take care of the family with the purpose of the continued care to the child at home. The nurse guides his practice from knowledge, from the political guidelines of attention to the preterm and low weight newborn children, but, above all, on the personal and particular attitudes of each professional. For nurses, time and quality of the presence mark the care with the family, however, the demands of the Neonatal Unit compromise the availability of the nurse to be with the family. It seems to suggest that in order to takecare of the family, it is necessary to reduce the technological and bureaucratic procedures of intensive care by looking for a specific time to dedicate to family. The coherent would be to conciliate technical work and caring dimension, since caring for the family suggests proximity, reciprocity and commitment as essential attributes. Conclusion: It will be necessary a dynamic and continuous movement of competencies to manage and generate processes of innovation and renewal of nurses' attitudes and practices, and above all, the values that these professionals attribute to their actions and not only to the alternative of time availability. It suggests that the professional become a resource and find ways to support the family in what is important to them and to be committed to the person and their situation.
