Tennessee Williams is renowned by his canonical full-length plays written and first performed during de 1940s and 1950s. However, he wrote a great number of interesting one-act plays before, during and after this period. This article discusses the play The Magic Tower, written in the 1930s, and intends to show how important socio-historical issues are present in the play, particularly because at that moment the United States was facing the Great Depression, a severe economic crisis whose origin was the crash of the New York Stock Exchange in 1929. Moreover, the article also discusses the one-act play structure for that purpose.Tennessee Williams é mais conhecido por suas peças longas (full-length plays) canônicas escritas e primeiramente encenadas nas décadas de 1940 e 1950. No entanto, o autor escreveu um extenso e interessante número de peças em um ato (one-act plays) antes, durante e depois desse período. O artigo trata da peça The Magic Tower, escrita ainda nos anos 1930, e procura mostrar como Williams inseriu discussões pertinentes no âmbito sócio-histórico, pois naquele momento o país vivia a Grande Depressão, uma grave crise econômica cuja origem foi a quebra da Bolsa de Valores de Nova York em 1929. Além disso, discute a forma da peça em um ato para a realização desse propósito.
