This essay intends to criticize some constructs which determinate approaches that focus the making of State in the Early Modern Europe on teleological interpretative keys of institutional modernity. At the end, I show a short critical approach that demonstrates how ‘political economy of gratia’ becomes utterly unnecessary to an historical understanding of the functions of sovereignty, authority, public administration and social relations in the Ancient Regime.Este ensaio pretende criticar alguns pressupostos conceituais implicados em abordagens sobre a formação do Estado que o inscrevem numa teleologia de modernidade institucional. Ao final, apresento uma breve crítica ao conceito ‘economia política das mercês’, demonstrando o quanto se torna desnecessário para a compreensão do funcionamento da soberania, autoridade, administração pública e relações sociais no Antigo Regime.
