The conventional methods of gloss evaluation in terms of specular gloss, contrast gloss, distinctness of image, etc. do not necessarily give the values which are in accord with the visually evaluated gloss. An attempt was made to find a linear relationship between the visual gloss and the gloss which. was measured by a physical method. A lacquer enamel was sprayed on art papers, and an acrylic resin or silica were applied to increase or decrease the gloss. The gloss of the films thus prepared was estimated visually, and a uniform gloss scale was drawn by the method of equi-section. The goniophotometric curves were measured with a HITACHI goniophotometer (type EPG-2) . The curves were measured at an angle of viewing of 45° while the angle of incidence was varied. The intensity of the light reflected from glossy enamel films was expressed by the following formulas, I=I, e-a952 (1) I= 4 e-f34 (2 ) where '0-.02 is the intensity of reflected light measured within 5° from the incidence angle at which the intensity of reflected light was maximum, and 4e-10 the intensity of reflected light measured. outside 5°. It was found that there was a linear relation between the visually evaluated gloss and log [/-(°°)IF5°)]. The correlation coefficient between these two values were 0.97 and 0.98 for glossy red and black enamel films, respectively.
