In their correspondence of 1669, Huygens brothers introduce the distinction between "esperance" and "apparence", that is to say between mean length of life (or life expectancy) and probable length of life (or median length of life). Unlike Lodewijk, Christiaan adopts a probabilistic approach; he considers more meaningful the probabilities to reach specific ages and the probable length of life than the "reste de vie", computed by his brother, which is only a mean.
