Les sites archeologiques de Carthage, Mahdia, Phalasarna, Motye, Rachgoun et Jezirat Fara’un ont en commun la presence d’un port appele « cothon ». Ce terme est utilise depuis l’Antiquite pour designer le port de Carthage et, aujourd’hui, les specialistes d’archeologie portuaire s’accordent pour l’associer a un « bassin portuaire creuse et debouchant sur la mer libre par l’intermediaire d’un chenal ». Ce travail, apres un bref inventaire des sources antiques et archeologiques, se propose de revenir sur la definition archeologique du terme, sur la vocation d’un tel type de port, et sur l’origine, peut-etre orientale, d’une telle technique d’amenagement portuaire.
