International audienceFrom 1799, are developing negative opinions on the school assessment of the Revolution. Historians must question the reality of this situation. Revolutionaries wanted to establish a system of state education to found the Republic durably. Would the Revolution have failed in this founding mission by preferring the words to the acts, the “utopian dreams” to the achievements? Revolutionaries have probably dreamed about the future, but they also acted in the present by legislating and by administering the school. This study attempts to measure the gap between exaltation utopian, desire for reform and the effective implementation. This policy was not always understood, and it has even been refused mainly because of its déchristianisatrice will. The political action of the Revolution in the field of education can be analysed as a great opposed and unfinished ambition.Dès l’an VIII, se multiplient les opinions négatives sur le bilan scolaire de la Révolution. L’historien peut s’interroger sur la réalité d’un tel constat. En pluviôse an II, le Comité d’Instruction Publique n’avait-il pas écrit au Comité de Salut Public qu’il mettait tout en œuvre pour développer l’instruction publique considérée comme « le gage de la solidité de la Révolution » ? La Révolution aurait-elle failli à cette mission fondatrice ? Aurait-elle préféré les mots aux actes, « les rêves utopiques » aux réalisations ? S’ils ont sans doute rêvé l’avenir, les révolutionnaires ont aussi agi au présent en légiférant et en administrant la question scolaire. En examinant le fait scolaire en Révolution, cette étude tente de mesurer l’écart entre exaltation utopique, volonté réformatrice et mise en œuvre effective. Cette politique n’a pas été toujours comprise ; elle a même été majoritairement rejetée en raison de son entreprise déchristianisatrice. L’action politique de la Révolution dans le domaine scolaire peut s’analyser comme un grand dessein contrarié et inachevé
