International audienceFrench policy in South Asia between the American Revolutionary War (1777-1783) and the Peace of Amiens (1802) marked a turning point in the intellectual history of foreign policy. Before this moment, India was rarely seen by the French as an area divided into several states whose rivalry formed a balance of power. The theory and practice of such a balance was the basis of eighteenth-century diplomacy in Europe, but it was not self-evident that they applied to the Indian case. This article explores the intense debate among envoys, officials, and memorialists over the possibility of a balance of Indian powers, which could challenge Orientalist stereotypes.La politique menée par la France en Asie du Sud entre la Guerre d’indépendance américaine (1777-1783) et la Paix d’Amiens (1802) marque une rupture dans l’histoire intellectuelle de la politique étrangère. Avant cet épisode, l’Inde est rarement perçu par des Français comme une zone divisée entre plusieurs États qui formeraient un « équilibre des puissances » en rivalités.
