In a cognitive rhetoric approach, the aim of this paper is to shed light on the main rhetorical devices at work in this video clip extracted from the annual CPAC 2019 conference. In this one-minute long excerpt (131 words), President Trump mocks Representative Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal. Based on the assumption that Trump is running off-script in this passage, the paper analyses the discursive means he spontaneously uses to ridicule the Green New Deal among which: sarcasm and inverted inference, repetition, theatrical prosody. It also questions the possible death of the “storytelling” in the realm of politics.
