International audienceThis paper examines the imaginary production of the sustainable city, focusing on its objectives, its stakeholders, and the media tools it creates. This imagined vision, which is no less than an ambitious project of a new society, is usually presented in terms of awareness and discourses of action conveyed by the local media. The analysis of various materials produced in this context (including opinion polls, iconography of urban design, and exhibitions) demonstrates the limitations of deterrent or persuasive communication seeking to impose behavioral change on individuals.La production de l’imaginaire de la ville durable est abordée dans cet article du point de vue de ses finalités, des acteurs qui en sont à l’origine et des dispositifs médiatiques qu’elle engendre. Cet imaginaire, portant l’ambition d’un nouveau projet de société, est généralement communiqué sous la forme de discours de sensibilisation et de discours d’action portés par les médias territoriaux. L’analyse de différents matériaux produits dans ce champ (études d’opinion, images des projets, expositions) montre toutes les limites d’une communication dissuasive-persuasive qui cherche à imposer un changement de comportement aux individus
