International audienceDoes the appearance of a marketing concept in the teaching sector mean that schools and training centres would become a consumers'market ? After marking a survey of the well-known analyses concerning the place of marketing, and chiefly the last historical stage of industrialization, the writer studies the use of a marketing notion in education. She observes that the term appears among the responsibles of public education, then becomes recognized through its use in the press and made used of by a professionalliterature. Though it is recent and little used in the state educational services, this point is admitted as normal and usual in private commercial colleges and it compels the information services included in public education (such as O.N.I.S.E.P) to revise their strategies.The writer makes out two kinds of discourses which praise marketing for education : there is certainly a liberal trend, but also a line according to which the centralized state system in schools should be modernized and transformed in the general interest of school and people.However, up to what stage can this educational marketing allow the notion of modernization to go ? If marketing aims at turning out the best products on the market, will it help to improve anything else than merchandised educational products ? At the moment the proceedings developed under the word « marketing » seem to be only concerning the kinds of activities which are on the bordus of the educational system but their impetus on the whole sect or is the sign of a deep-rooted work tending to bring people to refer to education as to an industrial model.L'apparition du concept de marketing dans le secteur éducatif est-il l'indice que la formation deviendrait un marché pour des consommateurs d'école ? L'auteur, rappelant les analyses classiques définissant la place du marketing, en particulier à la dernière étape historique de l'industrialisation, étudie l'usage de la notion de marketing de la formation. Elle note que le terme apparaît chez les responsables du secteur éducatif, se trouve légitimé par un emploi journalistique, et travaillé par une littérature professionnelle. Récente et peu dominante au coeur de l'appareil éducatif public, cette problématique est cependant parfaitement assimilée dans le supérieur privé commercial, et oblige les prestataires de service d'information habituellement intégrés à l'éducation (tel l'ONISEP) à des révisions stratégiques.L'auteur dégage deux sphères discursives qui prônent le « marketing de la formation » : une tendance libérale certes, mais aussi un courant pour qui la tutelle étatique sur l'école doit se moderniser et se transformer dans le respect de l'intérêt général et du service public.Mais jusqu'où ce marketing de la formation, même d'inspiration publique, peut-il permettre la pensée d'une modernisation ? Si le marketing vise à l'optimisation des produits dans un marché, aidera-t-il à moderniser autre chose que les produits éducatifs marchandisables ? Les pratiques développées sous le terme étudié semblent pour l'instant ne correspondre qu'à des domaines d'activité qui sont aux frontières du système éducatif, mais leur impact sur l'ensemble est l'indice d'un travail profond qui vise à faire penser l'éducation en se référant à des modèles industriels
