Charles Dupin contributed to technological exchange between Britain and France. He provided French readers with a detailed survey of London’s new docks, bridges and manufactories analysing commercial and operational systems alongside engineering and architectural innovations. Dupin’s influence was not limited just to France but extended to Britain also through the translation of his works. Indian engineers who trained in London provide a different focus to technological exchange extending to the British Empire in India and the operation of steam engine manufactories there. By the 1840s, some in Britain, were questioning the transfer of technology to rival powers such as the French and the Russians. Dupin concentrated on the potential transfer of technology from Britain to France and did not study the transfer of innovation and inventions from France to Britain in any depth.
