Of Bandello’s Novelle, Francois de Belleforest retains only the tragic narratives. In order to build a modern Christian society, he tries to close the gap between ways of living and religious values. Praising female virginity, he belittles physical beauty, in direct opposition to Neo-Platonist concepts. He denounces bad marriages as well as clandestine weddings. The Council of Trent had solved the conflict between specialists of canon law and those who upheld Roman law. Spiritual authorities on the one hand, worldly ones on the other, had drawn up a list of impediments to marriage. Belleforest’s Histoires tragiques show their obvious social impact. Although a history of clandestine marriage remains to be written, Belleforest certainly contributed to a rehabilitation of marriage and conjugal fidelity in late sixteenth century France.
