ACLNInternational audienceEven though there is no doubt that the type of professional training on offer has largely been determined by the recognition of the role of communication in companies and organizations, what is the effect on the foundations and theories of communication management ? Do professionals still feel the need to employ a conceptual and analytical approach in social and human sciences to their, inevitably restricted, practices. And even if they wished to do so, can they in fact  ? Relying on two studies carried out respectively on the training programmes offered in IT sciences and communication within French higher education, and by interviewing those responsible for internal communication in large companies, this contribution considers what is at stake, the limits and future perspectives for a professionalization in search of epistemic markers.S’il ne fait pas de doute que la reconnaissance de la fonction communication dans les entreprises et organisations a largement déterminé une offre de formation professionnalisée, qu’advient-il des fondements et ressorts théoriques du management de la communication  ? Les professionnels éprouvent-ils encore le besoin de mobiliser un appareil conceptuel et analytique en sciences humaines et sociales dans l’exercice, nécessairement contraint, de leurs pratiques  ? Et quand bien même ils le souhaiteraient, le peuvent-ils effectivement  ? À partir de deux études conduites, respectivement, sur l’offre de formation en SIC dans l’enseignement supérieur français et auprès de responsables de communication interne, cette contribution interroge les enjeux, limites et perspectives d’une professionnalisation en quête de repères épistémiques
