Bourgeois law and peasant norms met in the courtroom of Munich assize courts in the second half of the nineteenth century. In confronting the codified texts of law and legal system with court records from Bavarian archives about infanticide, arson, poaching and charivaris, « otherness » of bourgeois and peasant culture stands in the center of negotiation. This encounter mirrors the perceptions of peasant life and culture and the procedure by which bourgeois or civil society imparts is own norms to the peasant world.
