In a series of four lectures and in my research program of the last twelve months, I examined the history of Pratyabhijnā thought, primarily through an examination of the philosophical contributions of Somānanda, the founding author of the school. A study of Pratyabhijnā engagement with the realist Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika was followed by an examination of Somānanda’s particular contributions to the Pratyabhijnā arguments against the Buddhist Epistemologists and Dharmakīrti in particular. Finally, I examined the various arguments against Advaita Vedānta ontology in Somānanda’s Śivadṛṣṭi and suggested they exhibited a lesser concern with that school than was evinced in the writings of Abhinavagupta, Somānanda’s great-grand disciple.

On the contributions of the Śivadṛṣṭi of Somānanda to the Intellectual History of the Pratyabhijñā
