The prestige acquired by Marmoutier Abbey in Western France was substantial and it was able to found more than thirty priories in the duchy of Brittany, at first with the Duke’s support, as evidenced by the donation of Gahard, the first priory at the beginning of the eleventh century, and then with the support of the major barons. It explains why Marmoutier specialized in major foundations near castles, with the aim of securing an alliance with the big families. These priories result from the alliance of strategies between the lineages and Marmoutier. The phase of settlement, led by chief abbots Aldebert and Barthelemy, was in full swing in the second half of the eleventh century and concerns mainly Upper Brittany. These abbots, often present, favor a policy of settlement which sees the monks fitting very deeply into the life of the society, not only on the spiritual plan, but also on the social and economic plan, thanks to the dynamism of the boroughs.
