Cet article complète l’intervention élaborée pour la journée d’études Éclair, organisée à la Cinémathèque française, le 14 juin 2007.International audienceThe film work of Émile Cohl, if one believes the notebooks established by the filmmaker, comprised almost three hundred films, whereas only sixty or so titles have been discovered to date. The comparison between the surviving films and the information contained in the notebooks allows us to retrace the possibly exemplary modalities of early cinema, since Émile Cohl worked with the principal companies of the age : Gaumont, Pathé, Éclair, in France and in the USA. This comparison shows how, by promoting a new genre, the cinema of animation, Cohl was able to assert his singularity in an institutional, economic and ideological environment that was by definition constraining – the movement of a work that the author made an effort to reconstitute by assembling the pieces of a puzzle, most of which is missing.L’œuvre cinématographique d’Émile Cohl, si l’on en croit les carnets établis par le cinéaste, comprenait près de trois cents films or seuls une soixantaine de titres ont à ce jour été retrouvés. La mise en perspective des films préservés, avec les informations contenues dans les carnets, permet de retracer des modalités possiblement exemplaires quant au cinéma des premiers temps puisque Émile Cohl collabore avec les principales sociétés d’alors : Gaumont, Pathé ou Éclair, en France ou aux États-Unis. Confrontation qui montre comment, en promouvant un genre nouveau, le cinéma d’animation, il a pu affirmer une singularité dans un cadre institutionnel, économique et idéologique, par définition contraignant. Mouvement d’une œuvre que l’auteur s’est efforcé de restituer en assemblant les pièces d’un puzzle dont la plus grande partie est manquante
