The reaction between 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and the hydroxyl free radical generated either photochemically or thermally leads to a mixture of 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2- phenyl-1-picrylhydrazine (3) and 2-(4-nitrophenyl)-2-phenyl-1-picrylhydrazine (5). Proof for the structure of 3 was obtained from NMR spectra, methylation to the previously known 2-(4- anisyl)-2-phenyl-1-picrylhydrazine, and oxidation to the 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-phenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl free radical.
