N-Benzyl 1,4-dihydropyridine 2a and () 2-benzylaminocyclohexa-1,3-diene 3 are obtained in satisfactory yields by reaction between N-(1-chlorobenzyl)pyridinium chloride and ethyl 3- benzylaminobut-2-enoate in dichloromethane at room temperature. Mechanistic and practical considerations are discussed. Compound 3 has been unequivocally characterized by X-ray single crystal diffraction.
