Francisco de Aldana was a thorough reader of Italian trattati d’amore. These works, mainly Neoplatonic, shaped his ideas about love. This article offers a reading of his most famous sonnet, “¿Cuál es la causa mi Damón, que estando...?” in the light of five trattati of the sixteenth century: Equicola’s De natura de amore (1525); Speroni’s Dialogo d’amore (1543); Betussi’s Il Raverta (1545); Tullia D’Aragona’s Dialogo della infinità d’amore (1547), and Varchi’s Lezzioni d’amore (1561)
