30 páginas[ES] Analizando los debates constituyentes mexicanos de 1824 este artículo señala los principales\udaspectos que, a juicio de los políticos del momento, constituían los fundamentos del sistema\udliberal de gobierno que pretendían instaurar. Así, muestra cómo los diputados identificaban\udal liberalismo con los sistemas representativos, pero nunca con la democracia. Recompone\udlas diferentes comprensiones de la naturaleza y función del principio de representación\udpolítica, tal y como se expresaron en las sesiones parlamentarias, así como las distintas reflexiones\udconstitucionales que de ellas se derivaron. En definitiva, este texto propone que para\udcomprender mejor los sistemas representativos y, en concreto, la participación política es necesario\udatender no sólo a los procesos electorales sino también a otras instancias y mecanismos\udimplicados en la toma de decisiones que afectan a la comunidad política.[EN] By analysing the Mexican Constitutional debates that took place in 1824, this article points\udat what was considered at the time the main foundations of the liberal system of government politicians\udwanted to establish. It shows that the congressmen identified Liberalism with representative\udsystems, but not with democracy. It analyses the different ways to understand the nature and\udaims of political representation, as well as the diverse constitutional reflections derived therefrom.\udIt is finally proposed that in order to better understand representation and political participation,\udit is necessary to pay attention not only to electoral processes but also to other instances\udand mechanisms involved in decision making that affect the political community.Peer reviewe
