This article compares two publications dedicated to the same author and work, Joaquin Gatell and his Journal, with the aim of reflecting on the appropriation of a travel book by intellectuals in the service of the Spanish Protectorate in Morocco. The representation of the Spanish nineteenth-century traveller in both texts is built from the colonial perspective that characterised many Spanish publications in the 1950s.
