The Commentarie philosophique sur ces paroles de Jesus-Christ ‘Contrain-les d’entrer’ written by the French Calvinist Pierre Bayle is one of the most interesting chapters in the elaboration of the modern concept of civil tolerance. In this article we review some of the ideas developed in that work and analyze in particular the difficulties to reconcile the rationalist criteria presented in Part I with the skeptical arguments that dominate in Part II. In this respect, with the support of passages hitherto little recognized, an alternative reading is offered, namely that Bayle would not have wanted to elaborate in the Commentaire philosophique a theory of tolerance but to compile arguments contrary to religious persecution, arguments that could prove their effectiveness in specific situations.

El <em>Commentaire Philosophique</em> de Pierre Bayle: una interpretación alternativa
