The regeneration process of the maxillary sinus mucosa was studied . Fragments of the rat maxillary sinus mucosa isografted in the tongue were examined from 4 hours to 14 days after implantation by light and electron microscopy. The effect of colchicine on regenerating mucosa during this process was also examined. Untill two days after implantation, isografted mucosal fragments showed degeneration and necrosis but at 3rd day hyperplasia of the remaining basal cells were revealed. At 7th day these cells differentiated into both ciliated cells and goblet cells. Inflammatory reaction in the early stage of the process led the basal cells to squamous differentiation and transient squamous metaplasia was observed. Colchicine administered to the animals 5 days after implantation induced abnormal cilia . The results of this experiment suggest that the basal cells of the maxillary sinus mucosa have a multipotency to differentiate into squamous cells as well as cilated cells, or goblet cells by environmental conditions.
