精神症状および行動障害 (behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia: BPSD) を呈し, それらの症状に抑肝散が奏効したアルツハイマー型認知症 (AD) の5例を報告した。我々の症例では, 5例全例に易怒性, 興奮を認め, 4例に攻撃的言動, 不眠を, 3例に俳徊を認めた。いずれの症例に対しても抑肝散は比較的早期から効果を認め, また明らかな副作用は認めなかった。我々の検討から, 抑肝散はADでみられる易怒性, 興奮, 攻撃性などに効果的であり, また安全な治療薬と考えられた。また夜間不眠や俳徊を認める例, 抑うつ状態と易怒性, 興奮を共に認める例, 歩行障害や尿失禁などの身体症状を伴う例など, 向精神薬による治療が困難な例に対して, 抑肝散は特に重要な治療薬の一つと考えられた。
