「胸脇苦満」は, 現代医学的には分析がされていない。著者は, これまでの研究結果より, 胸脇苦満は身体化症状の重症度を反映するという仮説を立てた。この仮説を検討するため, 胸脇苦満と身体化症状との相関を, 慶大式胸脇苦満評価尺度 (K尺度) と Screener for Somatoform Disorders (SSD) を用いて検討した。150例 (男性38例, 女性112例, 平均年齢40.69±17.56歳) を対象として, 胸脇苦満の程度と身体化症状数の評価を行った。右側のK尺度得点 (胸脇苦満の程度) と, 現在ある身体化症状の数 (R=0.440, p<0.0001), 過去1年間にあった身体化症状の数 (R=0.476, p<0.0001) との間, 左側のK尺度得点と, 3ヵ月以上続いた身体化症状の数 (R=0.450, p<0.0001), 現在ある身体化症状の数 (R=0.597, p<0.0001), 過去1年間にあった身体化症状の数 (R=0.586, p<0.0001) との間に, それぞれ有意な相関を認めた。以上の結果より, 胸脇苦満を呈する患者ほど多くの身体化症状を訴える傾向にあった。胸脇苦満と身体化症状の関連が示唆された。
