アメリカリウマチ協会の予備診断基準を満たす慢性関節リウマチ (RA) 患者32例に防已黄耆湯を投与し, その有用性を検討した。全例腫脹関節数が2つ以上の活動性RAであったが, 投与期間中の他の薬剤の変更は行わないことにした。防已黄耆湯の投与前と投与後6週間で比較すると, 朝のこわばり (p<0.02), 疼痛関節数 (p<0.01), 腫脹関節数 (p<0.01), 握力 (p<0.05) は有意に改善した。CRpは改善する傾向が認められた。血沈値, リウマチ因子の値には変化は認められなかった。個々の症例別に判定すると, 疼痛関節数または腫脹関節数が投与前値の1/2以下となった有効例が14例 (44%) 存在し, やや有効5例 (16%) と合わせて60%の症例に効果が認められた。以上のように防已黄耆湯は活動性のあるRAに有用であった。問題となる副作用は認められなかった。
