Solution based processes have been proven very suitable for the generation of metal oxide nanoparticles with some control over size, shape, composition and assembly behavior of the resulting product. Although a dramatic advance in the synthesis development for the generation of high quality metal oxide nanoparticles can be observed, their fabrication in a predictable manner is still far from being realizable. One of the major tasks on the way to this ultimate goal is gaining a profound knowledge on the crystallization and molecular mechanisms involved in particle formation which will be transferable to other systems. However, the synthesis approaches for high quality nanocrystals often apply quite complex multicomponent solution systems hampering a detailed investigation of the processes involved. Therefore, a strategy is the usage of a synthesis approach which reduces the complexity to a minimum and offers access to diverse kinds of metal oxides for a possible transferability of the knowledge gained. In this context the benzyl alcohol route for the generation of metal oxide nanoparticles is recommended for such detailed mechanistic investigations. The benzyl alcohol route combines the simplicity of a two-component solution system with a high versatility and enables the usage of standard analytical techniques of organic and inorganic chemistry in order to achieve the desired correlation between the processes taking place during the reaction. Besides the synthesis approach, the choice of the metal oxide serving as a model system is essential and should be performed with respect to the mechanistic knowledge available, the robustness and ease of its generation. Therefore, the underlying crystallization and molecular mechanisms as well as influences on particle morphologies of zinc oxide nanoparticles synthesized by the benzyl alcohol route are investigated in the present thesis in order to increase the pool of knowledge towards a rational synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles.
