In the past few decades, wireless communication has become o ne of the fastest growing sectors in the communication industry. In order to satisfy t he tremendous growth of demand, wireless service providers are striving to improve th e communication systems so that higher data rate wireless transmission can be supported. On e of the major breakthroughs for supporting high data rate wireless communications is th e multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication technology, i.e., multi-antenna com munication. The utilization of multiple antennas provides a significant increase in the rel iability and the information transmission rate in wireless systems. After their proposal, mul ti-antenna communication has been widely adopted as a key solution for providing high data r e throughput in wireless systems. Nowadays, multi-antenna communication techniqu es are indispensable to most of the wireless communication standards. On the other hand, conventional wireless communication arc hite ture does not seem to be feasible to offer the high data rate transmission require d for future generation wireless communication systems in reasonably large areas, e.g., for the fourth generation (4G) cellular wireless networks. Relay communication was proposed as a means to extending the coverage range in wireless networks with reduced infrastru ctu e deployment costs. However, conventional relaying protocols require two channel us s to transmit the data from the source to the destination via the relay, which leads to a loss in the spectral efficiency. The two-way relaying protocol was proposed to recover a significant portion of the spectral efficiency loss. Such a protocol combines the transmission of t he bidirectional information flows in relay networks and is simple to implement in practica l systems. This dissertation deals with the analysis and design of comm unication techniques in MIMO relaying systems, especially in MIMO two-way relaying systems. The analysis of the considered system is based on information theoretical p erformance limits, such as capacity and achievable rates. For the design of communication te chniques, we propose practical transmission strategies and show their performance result s based on practical performance measures.
