As samples, we used data from patients suffering from blood related diseases because of their increase probability of contracting hepatitis via blood transfusion. At first, we analyzed donated blood with the HCV Ab ELISA (c100. 3, recombinant antigen) or HCV PHA (c100. 3, pHCV-31, and pHCV-34 recombinant antigen) Then, we traced the rates at which HCV antibody was positive, HCV-RNA positive or hepatitis infected after blood transfusion.Based on these results, we considered the effectiveness of the HCV antibody screening test by the PHA method. 1.After testing c100-3, four out of 23 samples (17.4%) were found to be HCV antibody positive, and three out of these four cases (75.0%) developed hepatitis.Moreover, five samples (21.7%) became HCV-RNA positive. 2.After testing 22 samples with the PHA method, neither HCV antibodies nor HCV-RNA positivity was found.However, there were two cases (9.1%) of false positive hepatitis. 3.It could be assumed that roughly 0.1% (5/5146) of blood donors passed the c100-3 antibody test without being identified as HCV positive. 4.The data indicated that dosages of y-globulin might temporally produce HCV antibodies or HCV-RNA positivity. 5.Based on these results, we conclude that testing for the HCV antibody by the PHA method is effective to prevent HCV and hepatitis infection.
