To apply the salvaging autologous blood trnasfusion method to surgery for the removal of malignant tumors, we studied how to remove tumor cells contaminating the salvaged erythrocytes using various antitumor agents (doxorubicin, chromomycin, aclarubicin and carboquone).Each agent was mixed with the malignant tumor cells (B-16 Harding Passey melanoma), which had an high malignacy rate. The malignant tumor cells were implanted under the skin of mice. Then the minimum concentration and exposure time of each antitumor agent for suppression of cell implantation was determined.The results of the study revealed that the minimum concentration and exposure time of each antitumor agent for exerting an almost complate cytocidal effect (95% confidence) on these tumor cells were 10, 000μg/ml and 20min, respectively, for doxorubicin, 500μg/ml and 15min for chromomycin and 1, 000μg/ml and 20min for aclarubicin (p<0.05). Carboquone, however, showed no cytocidal effect on the melanoma.
