International audienceWe present many reasons for rejecting the search of agents, whether individuals or collectives, responsible for GHG emissions and catastrophic climate change. The notion of backward-looking responsibility itself is not adequate to grasp the moral dimension of climate change, and seems even counterproductive. We defend a kind of forward-looking responsibility based on a thought experiment, the « vulcanocene » which disclaim human responsibility in GHG emissions and defend the idea of positive debt.Nous montrons qu'aussi bien au niveau individuel qu'au niveau collectif il est très difficile de trouver des responsables clairement identifiés pour les émissions passées de gaz à effet de serre. La notion même de responsabilité semble inapplicable, voire contreproductive, lorsqu'elle est appliquée à la question générale des changements climatiques. Nous défendons plutôt une notion de responsabilité future et de dette positive sur la base d'une expérience de pensée, le « vulcanocène », qui dédouane les hommes de toute responsabilité causale en matière de changements climatiques
