Based on an analysis of the controversies about the “crisis of third-worldism” in late 1970s France, this article describes the construction and uses of a stigmatized political category. It begins with some of the various definitions and “family trees” of third-worldism that have been drawn up by academic commentators, columnists and essayists since the mid-’70s. It then lingers on a critical point in 1985 to profile some of the protagonists in the “crisis”. Finally, it shows how several stigmatized groups (called from then on “tiers-mondistes”) endeavoured unsuccessfully to put a positive spin on this depreciated label. Ultimately, our analysis of the label probably says more about those who use it than what it’s supposed to mean. In a more general sense, the study of the political uses of this category shows how intellectual “crises” help shape, unify and crystallize some movements initially perceived as heterogeneous
