Depuis quelques années, le vote connaît une sensible érosion et une importante évolution de ses usages et de son statut. Il reste cependant, et de loin, l’activité de participation politique la plus usitée. Son caractère universel, son rôle légitimant, son côté gratifiant et son aspect de rituel contribuent à son succès. Cependant, ce vote est de plus en plus marqué par la montée en puissance d’une « contre-démocratie » de caractère protestataire. Celle-ci a contribué à engendrer un usage peut-être plus banalisé et, en tout cas, plus instable et intermittent du vote où celui-ci devient un moyen parmi d’autres, au sein d’un répertoire d’action politique de plus en plus vaste.For a number of years, voting has undergone a clear decline and has seen an important evolution in its usage and status. Yet, it remains by far the most common act of political participation. Its universal character, the legitimacy it grants, its gratifying nature and its ritual function all contribute to its success. However, voting is increasingly confronted with the emergence of a “counter democracy” based on protest. The latter has contributed to a more banal and certainly more unstable and sporadic use of the ballot, voting becoming one means among many, to be chosen from a growing repertoire of political action
