21 pagesInternational audienceBetween 2005 and 2009, the UNHCR evoked the sole motive of "change of circumstance" in the country of return to justify and promote the repatriation of Congolese refugees to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since then, reductions in the assistance and protection granted to refugees by host countries has qualified the notion of "free consent" to return, which is nevertheless broadly emphasized by the legal texts governing the terms of voluntary repatriation. The UNHCR is today obliged to take the interests of sponsor and asylum-granting countries into account, generally at the expense of the personal and subjective preferences of refugees and at the risk of erroneous evaluation of the level of security in the region of return. A multi-situated ethnography conducted in host and return regions allows one to grasp the various motivations of refugees in light of the structural and political conditions in which - but also against which - they may be forgedEntre 2005 et 2009, le HCR a évoqué le seul motif du " changement de circonstance " dans le pays de retour pour justifier et promouvoir le rapatriement des réfugiés congolais en République démocratique du Congo. Dès lors, la diminution de l'assistance et de la protection des réfugiés dans les pays d'accueil a contribué à nuancer la notion de " libre consentement " au retour, pourtant largement mise en avant dans les textes juridiques régissant les modalités du rapatriement volontaire. Le HCR est aujourd'hui contraint de prendre en considération les intérêts des pays financeurs et des pays d'asile, le plus souvent au détriment des choix personnels et subjectifs des réfugiés et au risque d'une évaluation erronée du niveau de sécurité dans la région de retour. Une ethnographie multisituée réalisée dans les régions d'accueil et de retour permet de rendre compte des différentes motivations des réfugiés, sous l'éclairage des conditions structurelles et politiques dans lesquelles, mais aussi face auxquelles, elles peuvent se forge
