Close-in giant planets with strong stellar irradiation show atmosphericcirculation patterns with strong equatorial jets and global-scale stationarywaves. So far, almost all modeling works on atmospheric circulations of suchgiant planets have mainly considered external radiation alone, without takinginto account the role of internal heat fluxes or just treating it in verysimplified ways. Here, we study atmospheric circulations of strongly irradiatedgiant planets by considering the effect of internal forcing, which ischaracterized by small-scale stochastic interior thermal perturbations, using athree-dimensional atmospheric general circulation model. We show that theperturbation-excited waves can largely modify atmospheric circulation patternsin the presence of relatively strong internal forcing. Specifically, oursimulations demonstrate three circulation regimes: superrotation regime,midlatitude-jet regime, and quasi-periodic oscillation regime, depending on therelative importance of external and internal forcings. It is also found thatstrong internal forcing can cause noticeable modifications of the thermal phasecurves.
