On 6th July 1976, fecal droppings were collected in a nest of the Black Woodpecker after the fledging of nestlings. The nest is in the broad-leaved forest in the Tomakomai Experiment Forest of Hokkaido University, which is located in the south-central part of Hokkaido. When the droppingswere collected by putting a hand in the nest hole, some little part of the droppings were lost due to falling down on the ground and a small amount might have been left in the nest. The droppings were preserved in a phial with 70 alcohol solution and later were put under a binocular microscope to examine the prey species and to count the number of prey individuals. Ants were identified by their heads, Dermaptera by its cercus, and spiders by its cephalothorax and chelicera. The results of the dropping analysis are shown in Table 1. Ants, especially Lasius niger, were numerous in the droppings. As the nest hole was newly dug in 1976, there is no possibility that droppings of the previous year are mixed with the present sample. The present results would reflect the food of the nestlings of the Black Woodpecker in the later feeding stage.
